1. Slice the potatoes and arrange them in a baking dish. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the milk over them and sprinkle pieces of butter all over the surface.
2. Bake in a preheated oven at 170-180°C until the potatoes are golden brown.
3. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with the cheese, and continue baking until the cheese is golden and has a nice gratiné finish.
